[Best known today as the author of The Forsyte Saga, John Galsworthy was a popular and prolific novelist and playwright in the early decades of the twentieth century.
Galsworthy had a lifelong interest in social and moral issues, in particular the dire effects of poverty.
He was awarded the Order of Merit in 1929 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1932.
