In the normal way of things, an election for a random US Senate seat would be of very little interest in the UK.

But it's surprising how many of my Christian friends have breathed a little sigh of relief at the victory of Doug Jones over Roy Moore in Alabama. Nothing to do with us, you might say – but that's not quite true.
